The JCC celebrates a special birthday with another special lady.

All of our clients mean a lot to us, but one particular person just had a very ‘special’ birthday and we greatly enjoyed celebrating with her. Rose Salik turned 100 years old. We wish her continued good health and happiness. Thank you to Assemblyman Farrell for putting together a beautiful proclamation about Rose Salik's life.

On the Front Lines of Hunger
The Jewish Community Council of Washington Heights-Inwood runs the only kosher food pantry in Upper Manhattan. The pantry is usually open Tuesday-Thursday from 11am-1pm, serving an average of 300 households per week. However, on occasion we are forced to close the pantry due to a lack of food and we have to turn people away.
If you are able to help the JCC to help our neighbors by running a food drive at your school, work, or synagogue, please contact acoleman@jccwhi.com.
Click here for photos of our food pantry on January 25th, when we served 140 households in just 2 hours.

9/11/11 Day of Service WaHI

Click here for photos of the 9/11 Day of Service

Over 130 members of the Washington Heights Jewish community joined together on 9/11/11 for a 'Day of Service WaHI', organized by the Jewish Community Council of Washington Heights-Inwood (JCC-WHI).

"In addition to providing a meaningful opportunity for neighborhood residents to mark the 10th anniversary of 9/11 through volunteerism, my goal for the Day of Service was to introduce people to local Jewish communal institutions that they might not otherwise visit and to bring members of the Jewish community together who might not otherwise meet" said organizer Anat Coleman, Community Affairs Director at the JCC-WHI. This goal was achieved through a morning of volunteer projects, hosted by 8 local Jewish institutions, which ranged from preparing activity boxes for hospitalized children to beautifying Bennett park.

Following the volunteer projects, the local Jewish community was invited to join together for a commemoration, attended by several elected officials. At this moving commemoration ceremony, representatives from each of the neighborhood institutions played a role, in keeping with the community-building nature of the event. Rabbi Ellis Bloch, JCC-WHI Board President, underscored the theme of the Day of Service by reflecting that, by coming together in acts of kindness, we have actively shown that the evil perpetrated on 9/11/01 has not won.

Fit, Fun, and Balanced
The JCC-WHI, in collaboration with Moriah Senior Center, is running a free program for seniors that incorporates exercise with tips on fall prevention.
The class meets in 90 Bennett Avenue at 2:00pm on Thursdays.

(4) Make sure to have your medications reviewed periodically by your MD
(5) Remove clutter that you might trip over like wires, throw rugs, and newspapers
(6) Carry small and light loads to avoid losing your balance
(7) Make sure your hallways going to the bathroom are well lit at night
(8) Use your walker or cane if you are supposed to when walking indoors and outdoors
(9) See a Physical Therapist if you feel weak or unsteady
